X Xenobiotics – Alien Outsiders in Your Body

Detoxing isn’t a juice—it’s a biological process to clear out poisons from your body.

Xenobiotics are compounds foreign to the body—like pollutants, drugs, pesticides, food additives, and synthetic chemicals. Your body doesn’t produce them but they are taken in from the foods we eat, the drugs we use, smoking, alcohol and even therapeutic agents. To deal with them, our liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and gut all work overtime to detoxify these substances.

While your body has built-in detox systems, overload from constant exposure— microplastics, processed foods, and environmental toxins—can strain them. This is where supporting detox pathways through lifestyle becomes crucial.

Forget trendy cleanses. Real detox is about giving your body the tools and time it needs to do its job. The body detoxifies xenobiotics—foreign compounds like drugs, pollutants, and synthetic chemicals—primarily through the liver using three main pathways: First it uses enzymes like cytochrome P450 to modify xenobiotics by introducing polar groups to make the compound more water-soluble. Then it attaches molecules like glutathione, sulfate, or glucuronic acid to the compounds to make them even more water-soluble and easier to excrete. Finally, these modified compounds are transported out of cells and eliminated through bile, urine, or feces. What can we do to detoxify ourselves? Think of these 3 action steps.

3 Easy Action Steps:

  1. Reduce exposures. Go for glass over plastics, choose clean food, personal care products and household cleaners.
  2. Support liver functions: Eat veggies like leafy greens, brussels sprouts, broccoli, adequate protein and healthy fats.
  3. Sweat it out. Exercise and sauna sessions help eliminate toxins through skin.
