034 Jenn Lyman: Grow Stronger not Skinnier as You Age

Jan 10, 2022 | Podcast Episode

Chef and restaurateur, Marcus Samuelsson, points out that. ‘we struggle with eating healthily, obesity, and access to good nutrition for everyone. But we have a great opportunity to get on the right side of this battle by beginning to think differently about the way that we eat and the way that we approach food.’

Today I talk with registered dietician, Jen Lyman, about  new  paradigms that are displacing  long standing nutritional dogmas. We discuss the importance of becoming stronger rather than skinnier as we age. With concern about the rampant obesity epidemic, people worry about creeping weight gain as they age. Rather than a focus on weight or BMI (body mass index), numbers that categorize them as obese, we should focus on changes in body composition and the impact on other aspects of health. We touch on the importance of adequacy of vitamin D, magnesium, and protein.

Jen is the owner of New Leaf Nutrition,  a nutrition counseling facility that focuses on long-term client relationships to improve health in a sustainable way. New Leaf Nutrition takes a holistic approach to nutrition therapy, including functional medicine testing such as food sensitivity testing (MRT), hormone testing (DUTCH), and gut analysis assays (GI Map).

Jen’s 3 take aways:
1) eat highly bioavailable protein at every meal
2) walk and lift weights to build muscle mass and increase bone density
3) have vitamin D levels checked and supplement as needed
